October 15, 2024/From the Hive

This was one of the first removals we did of the 2024 bee season. I became a mentor with Hives for Heroes this year. My mentee, Richard Reese, teamed up with me a lot this season. We worked together to remove and relocate numerous honey bee colonies this season. He has brought a unique skill set to relocation & repairs, and I couldn’t have done this one without him. This particular colony had been in the homeowner’s structure for several years. The bees started collecting in the house and stinging the homeowners as they slept. That was when they decided it was time for them to go. It always amazes me how bees find their way inside homes from the cavity they are in. They always track the inside lights and sunlight through the windows. It seemed so simple which cavity this colony was located in after we searched just about all other possibilities.

It took several days to locate, remove, insulate, and repair the roof. We worked into dark on one of the days. Luckily, Richard brought lights and the bees were already relocated, because honey bees are extremely crawly and stingy after dark. 😁
