November 8, 2023/From the Hive

Typically our resource hives are five frame nucleus boxes stacked anywhere from three to five high. This year we also began to do more experimenting with Support Hives from Dadant. They are two four frame hives with a divider in the middle of the first deep box. They then can be stacked with four frame nucleus boxes keeping the two colonies separate, yet still sharing side wall warmth. We use these hives for frames of brood and bees to introduce our treatment free queens to. This particular stack did not get equalized before Winter even though I was constantly using there frames, so I am going to overwinter them in this configuration. For safety, and not to be out done by the wind, I strapped them down and put heavy bricks on top.
