October 5, 2012/From the Hive

I really had been anxious about not having an electric fence around the hives in the Black Forest.

Probably,  more so recently,  because now is the time bears are looking to gorge themselves before hibernating. What  better place then seven hives of bees, loaded with honey and bee larvae?

I can rest easier now and not have any more dreams of the apiary being shredded to pieces by bears.   A term called Yogi’d, thanks to my friend Kyle.

He and I had been working on this project for several months, but the main hold up was the solar battery (had to save the pennies) which packs nine thousand volts. Of course, we had to try it out by touching the lines and seeing what kind of jolt the bear would be getting. Pretty uncomfortable. But, if a bear came into the apiary at full speed, I am certain that things would start snapping before she/he retreated.

That being said, I hope that bears will not come around at all.  Or, come by easy like Sunday morning. Whichever way they may come by the apiary, I feel much better about having this job complete.
